Pipa Altınay in Sea Foam (Block Meerschaum) – "Koblenz 2000" – NEW (NOS) Conditions: New Old Stock (NOS) – New from era stock, never smoked, never used, immaculately preserved as a collection piece. Splendid and exclusive example of a straight pipe (paneled/Dublin) entirely handmade in Real Sea Foam Block Meerschaum by the famous Turkish manufacturer Altınay, a world-leading brand and byword for the highest quality in meerschaum work. The piece dates from 2000 and is a special or commemorative production. On the side of the bowl it bears the official engraving of the heraldic coat of arms of the German city of Koblenz with the autograph inscription "Koblenz 2000". The shank features a refined hand-carved leaf/feather motif incision on three sides, highlighting its artistic craftsmanship. The pipe has never been touched by bare hands on the bowl to preserve the original layer of virgin beeswax, a fundamental element so that the foam, with the first puffs, begins to color uniformly and take on the typical precious amber shades. The mouthpiece in amber-tinted acrylic boasts the original gilded inlay stamp with the logo "ALTINAY" perfectly visible and intact. Accompanied by its original rigid tailor-made case, lined inside with golden/ocre velvet and bearing the manufacturer’s authenticity sticker: "Handcarved Block Meerschaum - Turkey". Typically, foam pipe classification in classic forms takes into account the size of the raw block and, mainly, the height of the bowl: hence the group classification from 5 (small) to 10 (giant). All individually boxed with a unique artisanal process. Sea foam, generally known as the "white goddess", is composed of magnesium silicate (scientifically named sepiolite), found in Turkey and Tanzania. Its origin is uncertain, but it is presumed that the lime-rich river waters eroded magnesian rocks and deposited the formed mud; possible geological changes would have altered the river course, leaving behind alluvial deposits at depths of forty to eighty meters, which were later pressed into blocks under the pressure of overlying tectonic masses. While there are numerous legends about the birth date of the first pipe carved from this particularly light material, it is certain that the first European sea foam pipes were made in Hungary and imported by some nobles to Vienna, where a sea foam processing center developed. By around 1870, over two hundred companies in the Austrian capital produced magnesium silicate pipes, and the term “Vienna foam” entered pipe literature. The best sea foam used in pipe making is block foam from Turkey; the Tanzania-origin material is geologically younger than the Turkish one (primarily quarried around Eskişehir), does not yield the same result, and does not present the same truly white color. Block foam pipes are usually turned: blocks are first cut to the correct size, softened in water and, while still moist, turned and drilled; often carved or ornamented. While in the past the turned or carved heads were dipped in whale white, today they are dipped in clarified white wax. Sea foam pipes have won many smokers for not requiring a break-in, not scorching, and allowing the tobacco to retain its aroma; thus the pipe does not mind if the smoker uses different tobaccos. Most smokers wish the color of their “white goddess” to gradually change, first to amber, then pink, eventually reaching dark brown. To achieve this, however, one must smoke the pipe hundreds of times, bearing in mind that the first time should be done with great caution. Costs and shipping charges are entirely at the buyer’s expense, advance payment of shipping costs, thank you.
