FIRST EDITION OF THIS NEW FRENCH EDITION, COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES A finely preserved eighteenth-century edition of Alexandre Gordon’s celebrated history of Pope Alexander VI and his son César Borgia, one of the most notorious and fascinating political families of Renaissance Italy. First published in English and subsequently translated into French, Gordon’s work offers a detailed account of the pontificate of Alexander VI, the Borgia family, the Italian Wars and the complex political and diplomatic relations between the papacy, France and the principal Italian states at the turn of the sixteenth century. The narrative extends from the accession of Alexander VI in 1492 to the death of César Borgia in 1507, drawing extensively upon contemporary and near-contemporary historical sources. This 1751 edition, published by Pierre Mortier at Amsterdam, represents a new edition of the French translation first issued in 1732. The work is particularly notable for its engraved portraiture, including the striking engraved portrait of Alexander VI, shown in full papal regalia, together with a portrait of César Borgia and further engraved portraits accompanying the text. The present copy is complete in two volumes, in contemporary richly decorated bindings. Both volumes retain their original eighteenth-century character, with elaborately gilt spines, raised bands, gilt floral and ornamental tooling, red morocco lettering-pieces, and red-stained edges. The bindings display the attractive patina, wear and surface cracking characteristic of a book that has survived in its original period binding. The interior is remarkably well preserved for its age, with the characteristic warm ivory tone of eighteenth-century paper and occasional light spotting and foxing. The engraved illustrations remain present, including the particularly striking portrait of Alexander VI. A highly desirable copy of Gordon’s important history of the Borgia family, complete in two volumes and retaining its contemporary decorative bindings, combining political history, Renaissance Italy, papal history and one of the most enduringly fascinating dynasties of the sixteenth century. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1751. Two volumes, 12mo/duodecimo. Contemporary decorated calf, raised bands, gilt spines, red morocco lettering-pieces, red edges.
