Obregon worked in an abstract Surrealist style fairly common in Latin America during the mid-20th century, with his primary influences Pablo Picasso and the English abstract Surrealist artist Graham Sutherland. In 1954, Obregon completed one of his most significant works, a late Cubist style painting entitled "Velorio" that refers to an event called La Violencia, that happened on June 8 and 9 of 1954, in which thirteen university students were killed by army forces during a protest against the dictatorship of President Gustavo Rojas Pinilla at the National University, Colombia.
