Albert Marquet Boats in Tunisia, ca. 1920 Ink on paper 20 x 14 cm Hand-signed by the monogram lower right Yellowing on the edges Albert Marquet (1875–1947) was a French painter associated with Fauvism, though his work is distinguished by a more restrained palette and subtle approach to color. Born in Bordeaux, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris alongside Henri Matisse, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. Marquet gained recognition for his luminous depictions of urban landscapes, ports, and rivers, particularly views of Paris and the Seine. His paintings are characterized by simplified forms, atmospheric light, and a remarkable sense of calm. A passionate traveler, he found inspiration in the harbors and waterfronts of North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Unlike many Fauves, Marquet favored muted tones and careful observation over expressive color. His work bridges Impressionism and modernism, emphasizing harmony and spatial clarity. Today, he is celebrated for his poetic landscapes and masterful treatment of light and water. His paintings are held in major museum collections worldwide.
