This striking monochrome bundle pays tribute to Maria the Robot, also known as the Maschinenmensch, one of the earliest and most influential robots in cinema history. Created for Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking 1927 masterpiece Metropolis, Maria’s iconic metallic form became a defining image of early science fiction and an enduring symbol of the relationship between humanity, machines and the imagined city of the future. The two compositions reinterpret this legendary robot through the visual language of vintage Japanese manga magazines, retro science-fiction publications, technical diagrams and underground editorial design of the 1970s. Monumental portraits of Maria are combined with anatomical-style mechanical details, bold Japanese typography, distressed printing textures and imagery inspired by the futuristic architecture of Metropolis. The result deliberately evokes the appearance of a rare Japanese science-fiction magazine discovered decades after publication — somewhere between a manga cover, a technical robot manual and a forgotten piece of cinematic memorabilia. The dense monochrome printing, dramatic scale and aged graphic character reinforce the connection between 1920s European futurism and post-war Japanese robot culture. More than a century after the creation of Metropolis, the Maschinenmensch remains one of the most recognisable mechanical figures in popular culture, influencing generations of robots, androids and science-fiction characters across cinema, manga, anime, toys and collectible design. Artist and designer AE (Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Design and Multimedia Technologies, Barcelona, 2004; Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies) has developed a distinctive artistic language inspired by Japanese visual culture, minimalism, conceptual art, vintage manga and graphic design. His works are held in private collections in more than 30 countries, including The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. AE’s artworks are recognised for their restrained monochrome palette, bold contrasts and carefully balanced compositions. By combining minimalist forms with intricate engraved textures, symbolic imagery and references to Japanese visual culture, he creates emotionally evocative works that blur the boundaries between traditional printmaking, contemporary illustration and pop culture. His distinctive visual language has become appreciated by collectors seeking original limited editions inspired by cinema, science fiction, Japanese manga and iconic characters. The artist was the subject of a review by respected exhibition curator Thierry Fournier (Artnoises): “Collected AE (XX), it comes down to wanting, breaking, transgressing an invisible border, merging the civilizational DNA of the future and the past. The work becomes a ticket, a simple ‘go!’ for emotional teleportation lived entirely in black and white. Æ2381 invites us to leap into a timeless world populated by symbols, images and unexplored signs.” — Thierry Fournier (Artnoises) ★★★★★ * All photographs represent the artworks as accurately as possible. Slight colour variations may occur depending on monitor calibration and lighting conditions. ** Carefully packed and shipped immediately after payment with appropriate insurance and tracking. Combined shipping is available when purchasing multiple lots. *** The framed image shown is for presentation purposes only and is not included. We are a PRO and TOP seller. Bid with confidence backed by 100% positive feedback. Every artwork is carefully packaged and includes the extras described in this listing.
