The narrative allows one to follow an artist deeply tied to Montmartre, to illustrated journals, to humorous drawing, and to the world of cabarets. The figure of Pierrot, which occupied an important place in Willette's imagination and graphic work, gives its title to the book and can be understood as one of the symbols of his artistic universe, blending fantasy, melancholy, and poetry.
