Abel Hermant, Le nouvel Anacharsis – A Promenade in the Garden of Greek Letters. Paris, “Le Livre”, Emile Chamontin, 1928. Small octavo, 255 pages. Original edition, illustrated with wood engravings by Carlègle (frontispiece and 20 engravings), a rare copy on Japanese paper (no. IX), one of XL copies of collaborators (no mention of paper quality). The edition with a numbered print indicates only 10 old Japanese papers at the forme and 10 Japanese papers from the imperial manufactories, these 20 copies being the only ones announced with a suite (on Japanese paper). Our copy seems to be an imperial Japanese and indeed has a suite on Japanese paper (the 21 engravings are gathered on 11 sheets). Strangely, this suite has been bound at the beginning and in disorder. Very large-margin copy (especially in height), about 27.5 × 17.5 cm (a standard copy would probably measure about 18 × 11 cm). Binding signed Eumpus (? ) in Oxford, half-blue morocco with corners, spine with raised bands, boards covered in percaline, gilt top, first cover preserved. Spine somewhat faded, light rubbing to the binding. Very beautiful copy, rare on Japanese paper.
