A Stunning Necklace From Our Workshop Featuring a Large Moonstone & Diamonds

Pieces of jewellery that combine fragments of older jewels into a new composition are referred to as “mariage.” The term comes from the French word for wedding or marriage and describes the union of various historical elements into a harmonious whole. This necklace is also an example of such a “mariage,” as it is composed of components that once belonged to two different pieces of jewellery. The starting point was a large moonstone cut into an oval cabochon. The impressive stone weighs 69.25 carats and comes from India. Its mysterious colour is difficult to describe precisely; it shifts between a delicate mint green and a misty gray. Depending on the angle of the light, its appearance changes, lending it a fascinating vibrancy. This is due to what is known as adularescence, an optical effect caused by the moonstone’s lamellar crystal structure, which makes every stone unique. The moonstone arrived unmounted, but with a receipt proving that it was purchased in Zurich in 1966. Our goldsmiths crafted a simple gold setting, whose hue lies between yellow and rose gold. An antique jewellery element dating c. 1900 was mounted on top of it. The elongated element, made of silver on a gold base, is set with two small diamonds and provides an elegant contrast to the moonstone’s soft sheen. A modern platinum chain completes the necklace. Although the piece of jewellery was created from various historical elements, it appears balanced and natural as a whole. It is precisely the harmonious interplay of the different eras that gives it its special charm.
