Toutes les enchères / Arts asiatiques / A Chinese neolithic 'eggshell 'pottery cup, Longshan culture...

A Chinese neolithic 'eggshell 'pottery cup, Longshan culture, c.2500-2000 B.C., the bell-shaped bowl, above a turned stem with slit pierced hollow angular knop, on a circular foot, height 18cm, perspex stand, museum quality restoration to bowl of cup. With thermoluminescence test certificate from the Chinese university of Hong Kong, dated 15th August, 1994. For examples of black 'eggshell' pottery cf. Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 3 (I), London, 2006, pl. 1062. Krahl notes that the use of the potter's wheel was a technological breakthrough during this period which enabled more sophisticated forming than the coil-built method traditionally used. The Longshan potters exploited this new technique to create eggshell-thin vessels of breathtaking elegance, shaving the walls to minimal thickness with the help of a tool. To emphasise the appearance of weightlessness, these feather-light vessels were in addition pierced with openwork'. Compare also two similar examples illustrated in Chang Wei-Hwa, Pottery and jades of China's Neolithic Age, Taipei, 2001, pls 68 and 70 (fig.1 and fig. 2).
