A Chinese green enamelled 'Dragon' jar and cover, Qianlong mark and

A Chinese green enamelled 'Dragon' jar and cover Qianlong mark and of the period (1736-1795) well potted with a tapering ovoid body rising from a recessed base to a rounded shoulder and a short neck, painted to the exterior in rich tones of green enamel with two striding five-clawed dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls amidst cloud scrolls, all between a register of bajixiang ('Eight Buddhist Emblems') encircling the shoulder and a border of lotus-lappet skirting the foot, the flat-topped cover decorated with a writhing dragon chasing a flaming pearl and a ruyi border to the side, the base with a six-character seal mark in underglaze blue 20.5cm high, wood stand This jar with its green-enamelled dragon motifs represents one of the archetypal examples of imperial porcelain. The pattern was first created during the Chenghua period and remained popular throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. While in the Ming period dragons were mostly incised and reserved in the biscuit before being enamelled in green, in the Qing dynasty they were outlined in blue under the glaze and covered with green washes over the transparent glaze. Various types of ‘green dragon’ wares were produced over the centuries, including jars, bowls and dishes. Closely related vessels are held in public and private collections; see, for example, one in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p. 271; and another in the Tianminlou Collection, illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, vol. 1, Hong Kong, 1987, pl. 114. Provenance: Lottie Reizenstein (1904-1982) By family by descent The current vase and cover was brought to England from Germany in 1936 when Lottie Reizenstein followed her brother, the composer and pianist Franz Reizenstein. She studied at St. Martins School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. Lottie became a well respected painter and designer exhibiting widely in Europe and London from the 1940's to the 1960's. She died in London on the 1 February 1982 and a memorial exhibition (with Jack Bilbo and Henry Sanders) was held at Ben Uri Gallery in 1983; with a further exhibition with Iris Blain in 1987. Her work is represented at the Ben Uri Collection, University College London (which holds her archive) and in the Franz Reizenstein Room at the Royal Academy of Music. (Central School of Arts and Crafts)。 Condition Report: the cover with one crack to the rim 2.5cm long running vertically glaze crazing on the inner rim under UV and scratches on the surface some cracks to wood stand Condition Report Disclaimer, A Chinese green enamelled 'Dragon' jar and cover, A Chinese green enamelled 'Dragon' jar and cover Qianlong mark and of the period (1736-1795) well potted with a tapering ovoid body rising from a recessed base to a rounded shoulder and a short neck, painted to the exterior in rich tones of green enamel with two striding five-clawed dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls amidst cloud scrolls, all between a register of bajixiang ('Eight Buddhist Emblems') encircling the shoulder and a border of lotus-lappet skirting the foot, the flat-topped cover decorated with a writhing dragon chasing a flaming pearl and a ruyi border to the side, the base with a six-character seal mark in underglaze blue 20.5cm high, wood stand This jar with its green-enamelled dragon motifs represents one of the archetypal examples of imperial porcelain.
