6 late XIXth Century damask linen napkins with hand embroidered D.D

Six Antique Damask Linen Napkins with Hand-Embroidered D.D. Initials A charming set of six antique damask linen napkins, distinguished by their D.D. initials, delicately embroidered by hand in petit point cross stitch. The monograms are particularly interesting, with small pomegranate motifs appearing within the initials, adding a distinctive and decorative finishing touch. The background damask design is " damien" and in English closest to a check board design and very popular in the 18th and 19th C; as there was little else being woven due to the simple hand operated weaving machines. The original set consisted of twelve napkins, but following careful individual inspection, unfortunately only six could be retained. This is not unusual with antique French linen, where age and use have inevitably taken their toll on many surviving pieces. In the 18th and 19th centuries, French households often followed the practice of using the six freshly laundered and ironed napkins placed at the front of the linen armoire, leaving those at the back untouched. As a result, napkins from the same original set could have very different histories of use and preservation. Large embroidered initials were often the work of young women completing their schooling. Needlework was an important part of their education, alongside darning, appliqué, knitting and other practical skills. These were essential accomplishments for adult life, when linen and clothing were valuable possessions that had to be carefully maintained and repaired rather than readily replaced. These six napkins offer not only the charm of antique French damask but also a glimpse into the domestic traditions and needlework skills of an earlier generation.
