3 Roman Jasper, Carnelian, & Agate Intaglios in Ring Fragments

3 Roman Jasper, Carnelian, & Agate Intaglios in Ring Fragments

Roman, Imperial period. A trio of small Roman signet ring fragments, each still cradling its engraved gemstone in a battered bezel. The largest holds a banded blue and white agate cut with the left-facing head of Mercury in his wide-brimmed petasos, god of commerce, eloquence, and safe passage between worlds, set in a brass hoop. A second, in an iron hoop, carries a jasper intaglio showing a vessel flanked by a sword and a quiver of arrows, an emblematic grouping likely martial or possibly Dianan in reference. The third, also iron, preserves a carnelian intaglio engraved with a trophy, arms heaped on a post in the Roman shorthand for victory. Rings of this kind served as personal seals, pressed into wax to close letters and authenticate documents, so each device functioned as a signature in miniature. The engraved gem was the most personal object a Roman owned. Pliny the Elder records the shift from the plain iron ring of the early Republic to the elaborate gemmed rings of the Empire, and the choice of device announced allegiance, profession, or hope. Mercury, with his petasos and caduceus, was the favorite of traders and travelers, and his head appears on countless merchant seals. The trophy, a captured cuirass, helmet, and weapons mounted on a stake, entered the Roman visual vocabulary from Hellenistic precedent and became a compact declaration of victory, familiar from Imperial coin reverses and triumphal monuments alike. Iron hoops were far more common in antiquity than surviving collections suggest; the metal corrodes readily while the gem survives untouched, which is precisely the state these three fragments preserve. Brass, a copper-zinc alloy the Romans knew as orichalcum, entered wide use under Augustus and gave a gold-toned setting at a fraction of the cost. Item # 204644
