Viña Gravonia is the estate’s classic white Rioja, produced from Viura grown in the Gravonia vineyard. Unlike most modern white wines, it undergoes an unusually long maturation before release. The wine is traditionally aged for around four years in old American oak barrels, followed by further ageing in bottle, giving Gravonia its unmistakable mature and complex character. This extended ageing produces a distinctive style with aromas of dried citrus, yellow apple, quince, almond, beeswax, herbs and subtle oxidative notes, together with vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish. Despite their maturity on release, Gravonia wines are known for their capacity to continue developing in bottle. This lot is particularly interesting as it allows a side-by-side comparison of the consecutive 2016 and 2017 vintages from one of Spain’s most distinctive traditional white wines.
