19th Century Tibetan Thangka Depicting Buddha, Tempera on Silk & Cotton

A magnificent 19th century Tibetan thangka, hand painted in tempera on silk and cotton, depicting a central image of Buddha seated in serene meditation with his right hand raised in the gesture of reassurance and protection. Surrounding the Buddha are bodhisattvas, guardians, and celestial beings, richly adorned in vibrant colors, elaborate robes, and intricate jewelry. The scene unfolds against a lush backdrop of clouds and lotus petals, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. Thangkas are devotional scroll paintings used in Buddhist practice, serving as visual aids for meditation and teaching. Originating in Tibet, these works are revered not only for their spiritual function but also for their mastery of color and iconography. The Buddha depicted here, likely Shakyamuni, radiates calm and authority, embodying the essence of compassion and wisdom. This large-scale example captures the grandeur of Tibetan religious art from the 19th century, making it a rare and culturally significant piece. The composition is framed with original silk brocade borders, now showing age and wear, adding to its authenticity and historical character. Dimensions: 29"L x 1"W x 74.50"H Date or Era: 19th century Country of Origin: Tibet Condition Request Condition Report Age related wear. Small areas of soiling and paint loss. Tears on upper center and upper right.
