Toutes les enchères / Médailles, armes & armures / 19th-Century Sailor-Made Carved Bone Bodkin with Whittled Chain

North America or Europe, 19th century CE. A charming and skillfully made maritime whimsy: a long, gently curved bone bodkin, or lacing needle, tapering to a point and pierced near the tip with an elongated eye for threading cord or line. Attached at the top end is a whittled chain of interlocking links, the kind of patient showpiece carving that sailors made to pass long hours at sea. Tools like this were used to lace sailcloth, canvas and hide, and decorated examples were often made as gifts or keepsakes. The surface has a rich, dark, handled patina from long use. A fine example of shipboard folk art, combining practical function with a carver’s flourish. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205974
