In 1971, the Baur conversion was incorporated into the BMW lineup as an option on the 2002, and later on the E21 3 Series, known as the “Top-Cabrio,” which was subsequently unofficially renamed the “TC1.” After the launch of the E30 3 Series in 1982 as a two-door model—and in the absence of a convertible version (until 1987) from the Munich-based automaker—the partnership between the two companies was renewed. The Baur 3 Series E30 convertible was then introduced; like the E21 that preceded it, it was based on the same open-top design principle and was designated “TC2,” short for “Top-Cabrio 2.” The conversion is performed on an already assembled E30, removing the roof and rear pillars and replacing them with rear side windows and a two-piece manual soft top, as well as a roll bar to stiffen the structure. The soft top consists of a retractable hardtop (stored in the trunk) above the front seats and a foldable soft top (behind the rear bench) above the rear seats. All versions of the E30 3 Series sold (nine in total), with the exception of the M3—from the 316i to the 325i—could be ordered with the Baur option. This is partly what made it so successful compared to the convertible, which was limited to four engine options, as 10,865 TC2 models were produced in Europe. Given its uniqueness, the mid-cycle introduction of the less expensive convertible version, and the price of this “official”—yet almost artisanal—conversion, this is a true success. The TC2 Baur shown here is one of 2,377 units produced in the 318i version—that is, the most powerful 4-cylinder variant, excluding the sporty iS version. This very low production volume for a BMW is due to the fact that the price of the Baur convertible option was very high at the time and, consequently, few cars were ordered with this body style. In addition to this distinctive feature, our TC2 also stands out for its very rare configuration. In fact, painted in “Akaziengrün” (acacia green) with a light-colored interior combining Pearlbeige faux-leather upholstery with matching carpet, and a black “Sonnenland” soft top, it is very likely one of the only examples produced in this striking combination. It also features several notable options, such as a black leather sport steering wheel, 14-inch Bottlecap aluminum wheels, central locking, an electric right-side rearview mirror (in addition to the standard left-side mirror), tinted windows, a reinforced battery and alternator, radio preparation and antenna, as well as accessories such as the original tow hitch and rear mud flaps. All these features enhance its appeal. First registered in Switzerland in March 1986, after being ordered new by the current owner’s father on December 31, 1985, from the Autos-Import dealership—the BMW Les Acacias dealership in Geneva—it also boasts a spotless ownership history. In fact, it has always remained in the same family, following them wherever they moved—first in Switzerland, then in Germany for many years, and finally in France. Although it has seen varying levels of use over the years, it has always been carefully maintained, as evidenced by its excellent condition and state of preservation. This condition is all the more remarkable given that the car has even retained its original paint and
