1947 Bentley Mk VI “Old Number One” two-seat recreation

1947 Bentley Mk VI “Old Number One” two-seat recreation - Built to a very high standard, very faithful to the spirit of its time - Based on historic Bentley and Rolls-Royce parts - An ideal way to experience the thrills of a racing Bentley, with modern-day reliability The Bentley Speed Six known as “Old Number One” is one of the most famous in the company’s history: owned by Woolf Barnato, it made a name for itself at the 24 Hours of Le Mans before undergoing various modifications during the course of its life. The car presented for sale is a recreation of “Old Number One” in a later specification than that at Le Mans, a two-seat version with a pointed tail. Ordered in March 2012 at Techno Classica Essen by Thierry Dehaeck from Racing Green Engineering in Wales, who delivered it in December 2013, the car was based on a 1947 Bentley Mark VI chassis with its body replaced by an aluminium racing body over a wooden frame, as was done in period. It was fitted with a Rolls-Royce/Bentley Type B81 8-cylinder in-line engine of 6.5 litres (a capacity virtually identical to the original Speed Six engine) dating from the 1940s, developing more than 200bhp and mated to a manual gearbox with synchromesh on all four gears. Independent front suspension, a live rear axle and drum brakes all round (hydraulically controlled at the front) rounded off the mechanical specification. The interior fittings were also modelled on Bentleys of the 1930s, with an aluminium dashboard, rebuilt period instruments and leather bucket seats, all complemented by controls and accessories identical to those fitted to older models. A Halda ‘Tripmaster’ is the only modern-looking item in this sporty cockpit. Dehaeck has taken part with the car in several rallies such as the Zoute Grand Prix, the Kitzbüheler Alpenrallye in Austria and the Trimard Classic Rally, which used a photo of the car for its poster. Supplied with a file of photographs showing details of its construction, the factory build sheet of the original Mark VI and a FIVA ID card, this sporty two-seater is extremely faithful to the spirit of its time, both mechanically and aesthetically. Easier to drive than an older Bentley, thanks to its all-synchro gearbox, it lets you experience the thrills of a big Bentley from its glory years in competition, with none of the weaknesses of a car from that period. Maybe the best of both worlds ... We invite potential bidders to contact the relevant authorities in the country of destination to find out about the possibilities for registering this vehicle.
