1883 George Washington (Evacuation Day) Medal. By Charles Osborne, Engraved by Lea Ahlborn. Miller-6, Musante GW-981, Baker S-319. Bronze. Gem Mint State. Housed in the Original Brown Leather Book Case, Without CCNY. 57.0 mm, medal; 110.0 mm x 129.0 mm, case. Designed in America by Charles Osborne, but struck at the Royal Mint in Stockholm, Sweden. Although plans for a medal for the Centennial of Evacuation Day were set into motion well before the event, the backdated medals were not produced until late the following year and into the next. In all, 332 bronze specimens were produced. They feature an unusual concave obverse depicting the George Washington statue on the steps of the Sub-Treasury Building on Wall Street. The reverse with a more traditional rendering of the seals of the City of New York, the New York City Chamber of Commerce, and the American Numismatic Society. A medal very popular with competing groups of Washington collectors and ANS medal collectors. The front cover of the original case is printed in gilt lettering TO COMMEMORATE THE / CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION / NOVEMBER 26, 1883 / OF THE / EVACUATION OF NEW YORK / BY THE BRITISH / AND THE ERECTION OF THE / STATUE OF WASHINGTON / IN WALL STREET. Unlike other cases of this general type that we have offered, the back of this one is blank without the CCNY monogram. The interior of the case, front and back, provides information on the Committee for the Celebration of the Day. The case is nicely preserved, spine with minor wear from use, but fully intact, corners fairly crisp. (Total: 1 medal; 1 case) Provenance: From the John P. Burnham Collection.
