1879 Four-Dollar Gold Stella. Flowing Hair. Judd-1635, Pollock-1833

The Barber-Designed Flowing Hair Stella 1879 Four-Dollar Gold Stella. Flowing Hair. Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, JD-1. Rarity-3. Gold. Reeded Edge. Proof-40 (PCGS). Obv: The Flowing Hair design by Charles E. Barber. Head of Liberty with flowing hair faces left with the date 1879 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and the inscription * 6 * G * .3 * S * .7 * C * 7 * G * R * A * M * S * encircles the border. Rev: Five-pointed star, or Stella, is inscribed with the denominations ONE STELLA and 400 CENTS. The Latin mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and DEO EST GLORIA are above and below the star, respectively. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, and another expression of the denomination FOUR DOL. is inscribed along the lower border. A handsome and desirable example of this iconic rarity among U.S. gold coinage, this is also an intriguing $4 gold Stella due to the PCGS-assigned grade. While we have handled our fair share of mishandled 1879 Flowing Hair Stellas over the years - many coins of this type saw non-numismatic distribution after striking - rarely have we encountered an example with Proof EF details that is wholesome and problem-free, as here. Both sides are deeply and richly toned in copper-rose with hints of underlying pink and blue evident as the surfaces rotate into direct lighting. A faint scratch over and before Liberty's forehead is the only singularly mentionable mark, and it is of no concern during in-hand appreciation. Plenty of bold to sharp strike detail remains, and the eye appeal is exceptional for the grade. All Stellas are trophy coins, and this one would serve nicely in many advanced collections. Provenance: From the Mack C. Chase Collection. PCGS# 8057. NGC ID: 28AZ. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
