1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1502, Pollock-1655. Rarity-7-. Copper.

Rare 1877 Judd-1502 Pattern Half Dollar in Copper Only Seven Known The DiBello-Lemus-Simpson Specimen 1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1502, Pollock-1655. Rarity-7-. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-65+ BN (PCGS). Obv: Bust of Liberty faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST along the upper border, in small letters, 13 stars arranged around much of the rest of the border, seven left, six right, and the date 1877 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and her hair is tied back with a ribbon. This motif is similar to William Barber's famous Sailor Head design of 1875. Rev: A heraldic eagle with upraised wings and a shield on its breast is the focal device at center, with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM in the field immediately above. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, the denomination HALF DOLLAR along the lower border. Richly toned in dominant olive-copper, direct lighting calls forth vivid undertones of iridescent antique gold, champagne-apricot and powder blue. A couple of streaks of the final-listed color are seen at and around the base of Liberty's portrait - the most useful identifiers for provenance purposes. This lovely coin is fully struck throughout with glowing fields and carefully preserved surfaces. Judd-1502 is one of numerous pattern rarities of the year 1877, with the uspatterns.com website tracing only seven distinct examples in copper. This die pairing also exists in silver, Judd-1501, which is even rarer with a mere two specimens confirmed. Provenance: Ex "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Burdette G.
