Toutes les enchères / Livres, Cartographie & Manuscrits / 1870S FORT GRIFFIN TEXAS STORE BROADSIDE

1870S FORT GRIFFIN TEXAS STORE BROADSIDE Exceedingly rare, and most likely only one is existence, this broadside advertises the frontier store of Frank Conrad and Charles Rath at Fort Griffin, Texas. This was one of the prized ephemera possessions of famous Guns & Ammo and True West author and historian Phil Spangenberger. Conrad and Rath were famous partners in the 1870s on the Texas frontier. They operated the Conrad & Rath general store at Fort Griffin, which was a critical supply post for the buffalo hunting trade along the "Rath Trail". Broadside features amazing printed content with highlights reading: "AGENTS FOR SHARPS RIFLES / WINCHESTER RIFLES and COLT'S REVOLVERS." As well as, "Store situated on the Great Cattle Trail from Texas to Kansas." Established in 1867 to protect settlers, Fort Griffin was a crucial post against Comanche and Kiowa raids until 1881. Established in July 1867 on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, the fort (originally named Camp Wilson) was a key post in a second line of defense against Native American raids, providing security on the Texas frontier. Below the fort grew a chaotic, lawless town known as "The Flat," which served as a major center for the buffalo hide trade and was a stopping point on the Western Cattle Trail. Legends such as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday are reported to have met in the town's Shaughnessy Saloon. As the buffalo herds were depleted and tribes were relocated, the army deemed the post unnecessary, abandoning it in May 1881. CONDITION: Fine. Some light foxing around edges with a middle point fold line, and standard age commensurate toning. Provenance Ex Collection of Phil Spangenberger Item Dimensions: 14" x 19". Item Dimensions:
