Rarity-8 1870 Liberty Seated Dime in Aluminum Judd-874 The Only Certified Specimen 1870 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Judd-874, Pollock-971. Rarity-8. Aluminum. Reeded Edge. Proof-65+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC. The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1870 Liberty Seated dimes. Glowing silver gray surfaces are decidedly reflective in the fields, satiny across the design elements. The high points at the top and bottom of the wreath on the reverse are a bit soft, but otherwise the strike is sharply to fully executed. Untoned and virtually blemish-free, tiny carbon spots at the first letter T in STATES and the E in AMERICA require intent to discern and are mentioned here solely as identifiers for provenance purposes. A "regular die trials strike" per traditional numismatic wisdom, the Judd-874 was probably struck deliberately for sale to contemporary collectors as part of off-metal Proof sets. This attribution is very rare - a key type in the wider pattern dime series - with just two specimens positively confirmed through Saul Teichman's research published at the uspatterns.com website. That offered here is the only certified specimen, and the only one to have appeared in the modern numismatic market. The other was last seen at auction in Superior's L. W. Hoffecker Collection sale of February 1987, lot 953C. Provenance: Ex probably from Kagin's 295th Mail Sale, November 1971, lot 44, per the uspatterns.com website; Heritage's ANA Sale of August 1995, lot 8268, as PCGS Proof-64; Bob R. Simpson; Heritage's sale of the Bob R. Simpson Collection, February 2021 Signature Auction, lot 3229. PCGS Population: just 1 in all grades, all categories. CAC Stickered Population: 1 in all grades, all categories. PCGS# 800019. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
