1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-1. Rarity-3.

1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-1. Rarity-3. AU Details--Obverse Improperly Cleaned (NGC). Bright and nearly fully brilliant apart from pale rose-gold iridescence, this is a late die state example of the GR-1 variety. The reverse is boldly cracked, while an arcing obverse die crack travels from the rim below star 6, passes above Liberty's eye, and continues through to star 7. Hairlines on the obverse explain the grade from NGC, though the reverse has escaped the same treatment. The strike remains sharp despite the advanced state of the dies, and original luster is noted in the protected areas among the stars. Graham notes that GR-1 is challenging in Mint State, with even AU-50 examples qualifying for his Condition Census. Jim Koenings Commentary: Koenings' Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated this die marriage R-3. It can be found with two different planchet sizes, measuring 1.195 and 1.187 inches in diameter. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 531080. BASE PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
