1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-21. Rarity-2.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-21. Rarity-2. AU-58 (NGC). Deeply toned surfaces are enhanced by gold and blue undertones visible under a bright light on this Choice AU example of the GR-21 variety. Both the obverse and reverse dies show considerable fatigue, with stars and letters drawn toward the edges. The mark behind Liberty's head is hardly noticeable without a glass, and otherwise the fields and devices are largely undisturbed. The characteristic lump in the field below the O of OF on the reverse is somewhat difficult to see, but rotating the coin 180 degrees brings it readily into view. Specialists of the series will appreciate a prominent clash mark beneath the eagle's left wing, where the lip and chin of Liberty are plainly visible. In his 2024 update, Koenings assigned GR-21 a Rarity-3+ rating, compared with Graham's earlier Rarity-2 assessment. Jim Koenings Commentary: I rate this die marriage R-3+. It comes with stretched stars on the obverse. Further research is needed on coins with stretched stars. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4.
