1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-12. Rarity-2.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-12. Rarity-2. MS-62 (PCGS). An attractive type coin in its own right, this sharply struck and lustrous half dollar would also make an excellent choice for the GR-12 variety. Golden-toned surfaces are framed by colorful peripheries, while the silver centers provide pleasing contrast. A very late die state coin, the crack from the previous use of the obverse die is now more pronounced and is joined by others at the peripheral stars and base of the date. The reverse is also heavily cracked, with several cracks spanning the periphery and another extending through the center of the shield. Graham assigned the variety a Rarity-2 rating in 2012, while Koenings assigned it Rarity-3 in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated this die marriage R-3 (201 to 500 known). Most collectors do not know about Jules Reiver's 1837 JR-9, a variety with weak obverse stars 1, 2, 3 and 4, and weak letters UNIT in UNITED on the reverse. I have seen a similar specimen that may be GR-12. More study is needed. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Dallas Signature Auction of December 2017 sale, lot 3714. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
