1831 Classic Head Half Cent. First Restrike. B-2. Rarity-5. Large

Exceptional Gem Proof 1831 First Restrike Half Cent Reverse of 1836 Style 1831 Classic Head Half Cent. First Restrike. B-2. Rarity-5. Large Berries, Reverse of 1836. Proof-66 BN (PCGS). CAC. One of the finest examples of this rare date to survive from this early period at the Philadelphia Mint. The toning ranges through a blend of milk to dark chocolate, with satin smooth texture and a trace of original mint red near the rims, soft cobalt blue undertones discernible throughout with the aid of direct lighting. A strong loupe will reveal the stunning quality of the devices and fields, as they are both utterly free of signs of contact, and just as importantly spotting of any consequence. The strike is razor sharp throughout with each star showing full radial lines, and the hair curls on Liberty's portrait with the highest level of separation. On the reverse the leaves and lettering are also full and completely struck up by the die. The eye appeal is outstanding. According to the Guide Book, 2,200 half cents were struck in 1831, this despite a backlog of undistributed half cents from previous years' coinage. In truth, there is likely no such thing as a circulation strike 1831 half cent, though a few somewhat worn pieces have been certified, including the ESM Collection specimen in PCGS EF-45 and another in the Missouri Cabinet that was assigned a grade of AU-55 by PCGS. Instead, there are three varieties of Proofs that collectors can choose among to own an example of this date. Original 1831 half cents, struck in Proof finish in 1831, are extreme rarities, with perhaps a dozen known. The 1831 half cents with the reverse type of 1840 were coined much later, perhaps as late as the 1870s, and are also extremely rare. Just five are known. Most date collectors end up acquiring an example of the B-2 variety like this, if they ever find one at all. The 1831 First Restrikes use a reverse from 1836 and were likely coined in the late 1850s, when interest in numismatics in the United States first began to blossom. Provenance: From the Alan J. Harlan Collection. Earlier from our Baltimore Auction of March 2011, lot 257; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction 30, January 2019, lot 1; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction 33, June 2019, lot 43. PCGS Population: 2; 2 finer in this category (Proof-67 BN finest). CAC Stickered Population: 4; 0. PCGS# 1189. NGC ID: 2237. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
