1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-159, B-23. Rarity-3. Stars 8x5.

1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-159, B-23. Rarity-3. Stars 8x5. EF-45 (PCGS). CMQ-X. OGH. BB Die State III, early. Charming, thoroughly PQ surfaces for this eagerly sought Guide Book variety of the 1799 dollar. Generally light sandy-silver in appearance, both sides also exhibit enhancing blushes of champagne-pink iridescence as the coin rotates under a light. Glints of original luster remain in the protected areas around some of the design elements to further enhance the eye appeal. Sharply defined for the grade. BB-159 is a unique die marriage for the 1799 Draped Bust silver dollar in that the obverse stars are arranged eight left, five right. The reason for this configuration is unknown, although it was likely created in error when the engraver accidentally punched eight stars along the left border, realized his mistake, and then completed the die by adding only five stars on the right. Easily identifiable to the naked eye, this is one of the most popular varieties in the entire early dollar series of 1794 to 1803. As an appealing Choice EF, the present example will certainly see spirited bidding at auction. The old style PCGS insert does not note the Stars 8x5 variety and uses coin #6878 for the standard 1799 Draped Bust silver dollar issue. Provenance: From our Spring 2024 Auction, April, lot 7218, where it realized $14,400. PCGS# 6881. NGC ID: 24X7. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
