Majestic 1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar 1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-158, B-16b. Rarity-2. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC. BB Die State IV, the obverse die dramatically shattered by numerous cracks. An immensely challenging early U.S. Mint design type to find at the threshold of Gem Mint State preservation, and this is certainly one of the finest known for both the issue and the BB-158 dies. The surfaces are alive with luster that glows forth from beneath the flecks of russet scattered about, with a gloss of overall golden-gray backlit by soft champagne-pink. The strike is sharp for the type, most features fully defined and crisp. Examination of the surfaces finds little to fault here, as the fields and devices show just a few shallow marks from handling, and there are no edge bumps, nicks, or even (as made) adjustment marks. Although this die pairing is available in most grades, at this upper level of preservation the present coin is high in the Condition Census; indeed, it is included in the list of "Notable Specimens" published by Q. David Bowers in his 2013 Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804. Its offering in this sale represents a fleeting opportunity for the type connoisseur. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier from Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2009, lot 3945, as NGC MS-64; our (Bowers and Merena's) Los Angeles ANA Auction of August 2009, lot 1655, as NGC MS-64; Ira & Larry Goldbergs' Pre-Long Beach Auction of January 2011, lot 1519, as NGC MS-64; our Baltimore Auction of June 2012, lot 3021, as NGC MS-64. PCGS Population (all die marriages of the issue): 3; 6 finer (MS-66 finest). CAC Stickered Population: 10; 3. The former total includes coins certified both MS-64 and MS-64+. PCGS# 6878. NGC ID: 24X7. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
