Toutes les enchères / Monnaies & billets de collection / 1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 16.1-H, W-4600. Rarity-4. Draped Bust

1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 16.1-H, W-4600. Rarity-4. Draped Bust Left. AU-58 (PCGS). 156.1 grains. Warm medium brown and lustrous, with a few tiny swirls of charcoal tinting scattered about, as well as a hint of light olive overall. The obverse is off center to 12 o'clock, peripheral details on that side running off the flan at top, reverse similarly aligned to 6 o'clock with the lower border through the date digits. A shallow curved planchet clip is more readily evident at 1 o'clock on the reverse than in the opposite area on the obverse. Both sides are otherwise well produced for this Miller number, though the obverse appears soft, the result of acutely worn dies where much of the fine detail had eroded away before this coin was ever struck. Distinctive die cracks in left obverse field are joined by a short die crack or die scratch at neck and another in the lower right field inside the letters NE in CONNEC. Planchet microscopically pitted, as made; there are no post-production marks of note. Several high quality survivors of this die marriage exist, though not many that are so visually appealing. This one is similar in surface quality and overall eye appeal to the Robert M. Martin specimen in PCGS AU-58 that brought $1,200 in our November 2019 Baltimore Auction, although that coin was bettered centered with a nearly full date. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, April 28, 2011. PCGS# 409. NGC ID: 2B3D. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
