1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 6-C, W-5040. Rarity-4. No Sprig Above

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 6-C, W-5040. Rarity-4. No Sprig Above Plow, Pattern Shield. VF-35 (PCGS). 140.1 grains. SHI DS1. A well balanced, overall boldly defined mid-grade example of the Maris 6-C dies, nice medium and olive-brown in hue and pleasingly smooth overall. Well detailed all around, the date, horse head, and denticles strong for the variety. Good centering, as well, and highly appealing despite the presence of some minor carbon deposits on the reverse through the letters BUS in PLURIBUS. This variety is always avidly sought, due to its distinct style and often very appealing surfaces, as here. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex our (Stack's) Minot Collection sale, May 2008, lot 80; Anthony Terranova, July 11, 2008. PCGS# 522411. NGC ID: AUL8. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
