1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3-G.1, W-2805. Rarity-6-. Mailed Bust

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3-G.1, W-2805. Rarity-6-. Mailed Bust Left. VF-25 (PCGS). 106.6 grains. A distinctive Machin's Mills type, the only bust left type among the 1787- and 1788-dated types of Machin's Mills style. This one is struck from the early state of both dies, the obverse not yet sinking around the letters AUCTO, reverse with no evidence of the diagonal crack that later develops from the letter E in ET towards the center. Planchet is lightly to moderately flawed overall, quite heavily so in and around the central obverse, surfaces with light carbon build up and traces of microgranularity in places. The rough texture interferes with some of the design elements, especially for the effigy, but centering is quite good with peripheral softness confined to the lower right obverse and upper right reverse, where the letters EC in CONNEC and L in LIB, respectively, are soft to faint. Olive charcoal scale on otherwise walnut brown surfaces, this is a pleasingly original example that will nicely represent this Miller number in many specialized Connecticut collections. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex Richard August; Anthony Terranova, September 21, 2007. PCGS# 349. NGC ID: 2B2P. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
