1786 Vermont Copper. RR-9, Bressett 7-F, W-2040. Rarity-3. Baby Head. VF-20 (PCGS). The distinct Baby Head Vermont, a must-have for the Guide Book variety collector, but also among the most challenging RR numbers in this series to find choice. Planchet problems, poor strikes, unattractive color and other negatives pervade survivors of this die pairing, which often makes certified grade a very poor indicator of quality and desirability for individual examples. Even the best examples earn praise for one or two attributes, and often have offsetting detractions in other regards. When all of this is considered, the Emerald Coast specimen offered here measures up remarkably well, and certainly better than might be expected if one were to focus solely on the VF-25 assessment from PCGS. The planchet is positively choice, hard and tight with lovely color in warm medium and rose-brown. Even close scrutiny with a loupe reveals little more than tiny pits and a few small, widely scattered marks, none of which are worthy of undue concern. The strike is far from perfect, but it is boldest and clearest where it counts the most: on the effigy, which is near-fully outlined with a bold eye and profile. The obverse impression is otherwise off center to 12:30, left periphery soft with only a couple of letters in AUCTORI faintly discernible, VERMON legible but with border into the letters VER. The reverse is off center to 4 o'clock with a broad, boldly denticulated border at upper left, sharp INDE, seated figure bold but with little of the finer detail in the shield. The border at right is through the words ET LIB, which are still legible, if faint. Earning strong praise from your cataloger for the planchet quality, color, and detail to the effigy, this is a highly respectable RR-9 that is highly recommended for inclusion in any collection in which a superior Baby Head Vermont is desired. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 548. NGC ID: 2B58. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
