1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 18-M, W-4890. Rarity-2. Curved Plow

Lovely Maris 18-M New Jersey Ex Yale University 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 18-M, W-4890. Rarity-2. Curved Plow Beam, Bridle, Wide Shield. AU-55 (PCGS). Were it not for the existence of several Mint State coins and a number of other superior-quality AU examples, this PCGS AU-55 would definitely deserve a spot in the Condition Census for the Maris 18-M dies. The hard, frosty surfaces are impressively smooth during in-hand appreciation. A shallow curved planchet clip at 2 o'clock relative to the obverse is as made, but there are no troublesome flan flaws. Close inspection with a loupe is required to discern a few faint obverse pin scratches over and before the horse, these being the only features keeping this coin out of the CC. The reverse is positively choice, both sides dressed in lovely autumn-orange and chestnut brown patina that speaks volumes about the originality. A nicely centered, sharply executed strike rounds out an impressive list of positive attributes for this lovely piece. The last two PCGS AU-55s we sold for this variety are the August 2019 ANA Auction:498 coin and the E Pluribus Unum specimen, ex Damon Douglas, that most recently appeared as lot 6046 in our November 2019 Baltimore Auction. This one is as smooth and attractive in hand and it will delight many discerning numismatists, be they Guide Book type collectors or New Jersey copper specialists. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Yale University Collection. PCGS# 501. NGC ID: 2B4J. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
