1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 1-B, W-1880. Rarity-4. CONSTELATIO

1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 1-B, W-1880. Rarity-4. CONSTELATIO, Blunt Rays. AU-55 (PCGS). Superior quality and eye appeal for this challenging type, both sides are overall hard and glossy in texture, with just a trace of light roughness to the central reverse as typical of the Crosby 1-B variety. Handsome medium copper patina throughout, with a remarkably bold and well executed strike that allows full appreciation of all design elements. An impressive provenance further enhances the appeal of this already highly desirable Nova Constellatio copper. Desirable for both type purposes - Crosby 1-B is the only die pairing that corresponds to the 1785 Blunt Rays Guide Book listing - and inclusion in a specialized collection of early American coinage. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Henry Chapman, February 1925; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, October 2004, lot 40; our Americana Sale of January 2012, lot 7051. PCGS# 810. NGC ID: 2U44. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
