1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 4.3-A.2, W-2365. Rarity-3. Bust Right. EF-45 (PCGS). 146.4 grains. An impressive piece that is among the finest examples of this Miller number that the discerning collector is likely to find. Handsome surfaces are originally toned in blended golden-tan and chestnut brown, the latter color a bit more pronounced on the reverse. There is a hint of microgranularity to both sides, but the only post-production blemishes of any concern are a shallow scrape in the left reverse field that curves under the letters TO in AUCTORI and a concentration of fine pin scratches on the effigy's neck that require magnification to discern. Centering is quite good, all major design elements on the flan and more or less boldly rendered, obverse just a tad tight to 3 o'clock, reverse likewise to 9 o'clock. Some original planchet texture remains at central obverse and through much of the seated figure on the reverse, latter area also with a slightly more extensive noncontiguous fissure bisecting the shield and exergual line at the digit in the 8. Sorting out the Condition Census for this variety is no easy project. There are at least two technically Mint State pieces known, including the Oechsner-Partrick coin recently sold as NGC MS-61 BN, and the "Long Island Collection" coin ex Hall as NGC MS-63 BN, but those are both flawed and/or weakly struck. Other noteworthy examples include the Newman, Miller sale, and secondary Oechsner coin, all of which appear to be fairly well struck AUs. Syd Martin considered his coin AU-55 and finest known; it realized $2,040 in our November 2022 sale of his collection, as PCGS EF-45. This one is not quite as well struck, but only in isolated areas, and the in-hand appearance is that of a wholesome and pleasing coin. We have seen precious few examples of this Miller number that are clearly superior when taking strike, surface quality, eye appeal, and sharpness all into consideration. A desirable piece and a great addition for the specialist. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, July 2002. PCGS# 685161. BASE PCGS# 316. NGC ID: 2B2A.
