1773 Virginia Halfpenny. Newman 4-P, W-1475. Rarity-5. No Period After GEORGIVS, 7 Harp Strings. MS-64 RB (PCGS). Fresh, original surfaces are lightly toned down in golden-brown backlit by lilac-blue iridescence. Considerable mint orange color remains, especially on the reverse. Obverse off center to 3 o'clock with the right border engaging the digits in the Roman numeral III and the letters in REX. Reverse better centered, both sides with bold detail throughout the design. All around impressive preservation and eye appeal, a high quality piece most likely from the famous Mendes I. Cohen hoard, though a scarce variety that was clearly not found there in any great number. Although the April 10, 1606, charter that King James granted to Virginia gave the colony coinage privileges, it was not until December 20, 1769, that the Virginia House of Burgesses passed an act allocating money for the minting of copper coins in Britain. The act was the result of increasing pressure from tradesmen in the colony who sought copper coins to be used in commerce, as the mix of English, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch pieces that were dominant at the time were seen as inadequate. The final design was approved in 1772, and on May 20, 1773, the English crown authorized the coinage of halfpennies for Virginia. The coins were struck in the Royal Mint in the Tower of London. The Virginia halfpence are, in fact, the only coins authorized and produced in England for use in an American colony, and they served their purpose in the Colony of Virginia just prior to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Most Mint State survivors are from the Colonel Mendes I. Cohen Hoard, obtained by Cohen, a numismatist, probably the late 1860s or the early 1870s. The hoard contained in excess of 2,000 pieces by contemporary accounts, many of which were dispersed by Cohen over the years. Most of today's Uncirculated Virginia halfpennies probably originated with the Cohen hoard, to which current numismatists owe a great debt. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 244.
