Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" is a fictional story about a Lithuanian family's immigration to America and the hardships they face living in the slums of Chicago. Though the story is about a young couple trying to make it in America, the novel became a sensation when the seedy underbelly of the Chicago meat packing industry's shady practices and loose restrictions on grading cattle were brought to light. Sinclair himself went undercover in the meat packing industry of Chicago and his experiences led to the creation of this book. The book was refused by several publishers who found it too shocking to print. The novel focused heavily on the plight of the working man, the exploitation of women and children, and the corruption of those in power; but what caused the most uproar was the use of diseased animals for food production. As a result of public outcry, this novel was the catalyst for strict reforms in the meat packing industry and led to the formation of the Food and Drug Administration.
