nice matching lot of 6 x 4 1/2 inch mottled green glazed finish embossed victorian tile featuring a central seashell motif, with surrounding ribbons. the vintage late 19th century antique tiles were salvaged from a large apartment complex, containing multiple fireplace surrounds incorporating this particular repeating pattern. the tiles have a nice, uniform crazed finish along the surface. any and all mortar has been painstakingly removed from the backside of each tile. manufactured by the trent tile co., which was founded in 1882, and produced a wide variety of decorative embossed tiles in numerous glaze colors during the last two decades of the 19th century. the company's first designer was isaac broome, well recognized at the time for his modeling of the human figure, face and profile. he was followed by william gallimore, a designer and modeler from england who also had a well-established reputation. over the years the company's success paralleled the country's economy overall; the factory eventually closed in 1939. priced for the lot.
