Heffel

Field Voices - Jack Leonard Shadbolt

Lot # 415 Canadian & American Modernism Online auction Jack Leonard Shadbolt BCSFA CGP CSPWC OC RCA 1909 - 1998 Canadian Field Voices mixed media on canvas signed and dated 1954 and 1975 and on verso signed, titled, dated and inscribed "re-adjusted 1975" and "ink, acrylic and latex" 30 x 74 1/8 in 76.2 x 188.3cm Provenance: Private Collection, British Columbia Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, November 6, 1997, lot 215 Private Collection, Vancouver Sold sale of Canadian Post-War & Contemporary Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, September 26, 2016, lot 121 Private Collection, Vancouver It was Jack Shadbolt’s practice to revisit and alter earlier works, evidence of his process of evolution, and here he updated a 1954 work in 1975. After his 1948 / 1949 trip to New York and exposure to the New York School and international painters such as Pablo Picasso, Shadbolt plunged into abstraction. However, this was an abstraction that still referenced landscape or living forms in some way, and Field Voices expresses Shadbolt’s deep interest in biomorphic form, something that was very present in his work in the mid-1970s, when this work was changed. This active tableau of forms is based on the natural world—such as seeds, grasses, growth of all sorts, and life teeming below the surface of the soil. It is a rich and vital explosion of forms, suggesting a myriad of associations—totemic columns on the right, cellular and vegetal forms on the left, all rising and floating in a soft, abstracted background. Densely arrayed across the surface, Shadbolt’s forms speak to us all at once, broadcasting their presence and vitality. Gordon Appelbe Smith 1919 - Canadian acrylic on canvas Special Green 35 x 28 inches 88.9 x 71.1 centimeters on verso signed, titled on the stretcher and dated 1967 on the gallery label Literature:Ian Thom, Gordon Smith: The Act of Painting, Vancouver Art Gallery, 1997, a similar painting entitled Horizontal Green reproduced page 84 Provenance:Galerie Agnès Lefort, Montreal Private Collection, Toronto The year 1966 was a momentous one for Gordon Smith. The master architect Arthur Erickson had just completed Smith's hard-edged post and beam home in West Vancouver. In that same year, Smith initiated a series of canvases and colour serigraphs representing a rectilinear abstraction of landscape forms. Special Green resembles the canvas work Horizontal Green, in the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and is the basis for Special Green, a serigraph in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. In these works, earth-tone browns and greens are juxtaposed against vivid purple, blue, white and red lines, producing dazzling optical effects. These works were appreciated across Canada, including Montreal, where Galerie Agnès Lefort showed several of Smith's paintings in the late 1960s, including this canvas. Upon reflection, one can see how these works were a significant bridge between Smith's early 1960s painting style and his Seawall series from 1972 - 1974. Heffel

Sorel Etrog 1933 - Canadian bronze sculpture Metamorphosis 53 x 17 x 6 inches 134.6 x 43.2 x 15.2 centimeters signed and editioned A.P. on the base Literature:Pierre Restany, Sorel Etrog, 2001, page 61 Provenance:Gallery Moos Ltd., Toronto Sorel Etrog achieved great acclaim between the years 1960 and 1964. This was largely due to a series of exhibitions at Montreal's Dominion Gallery, Gallery Moos in Toronto and the Rose Fried Gallery in New York. His primary aim during this period, as Etrog stated, was to show the sculptural figure "soar[ing] from the base like the trunk of a tree with nothing happening until a short stop at the hips, leaving the drama for the top." Metamorphosis is a superb large-scale sculpture from this early period, with the eye of the viewer being drawn straight up to the central figurative mass as it changes form. Etrog is globally considered one of the most important twentieth century sculptors, alongside his well-known contemporaries Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore. Etrog's sculptures are housed in the most prestigious international museum collections. The Guggenheim, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London and the Musée d'art moderne in Paris have all acquired exceptional pieces by Etrog. Heffel
Helen Galloway McNicoll 1879 - 1915 Canadian oil
Helen Galloway McNicoll 1879 - 1915 Canadian oil on canvas By the River 30 x 25 inches 76.2 x 63.5 centimeters on verso titled and stamped twice with the Studio Helen McNicoll Estate Stamp, catalogue #76 Literature:William R. Watson, "Artists of High Order", Montreal Gazette, March 10, 1911 W.R., "Round the Galleries: The Royal Society of British Artists", London Sunday Times, November 2, 1913 Memorial Exhibition of Paintings by the Late Helen G. McNicoll, RBA, ARCA, Art Association of Montreal, 1925, listed page 7 Provenance:Estate of the Artist By descent to the present Private Collection, USA Exhibited:Art Association of Montreal, Memorial Exhibition of Paintings by the Late Helen G. McNicoll, RBA, ARCA, November 7 - December 6, 1925, catalogue #76 Helen McNicoll was doing the right thing for an emerging artist: returning to square one to plot a development. This painting of a riverside scene reveals her ongoing ambition to bring together light, atmosphere and a tranquil scene with considerable power of handling. McNicoll was trying to wedge Impressionism into the equation, making works in brilliant colours where small patches distributed on the canvas created an all-over pattern that combined in the viewer's eye into a whole, taken at a distance. Here she is painting in her impassioned way, freshly and spontaneously, while meditating on the new values in art which she had learned and in which she believed. The subject - reflections - is one which she used often at an early date, and we notice the way the trees are reflected in the water. Here the shoreline seems to be full of activity, a sign that may indicate a later date, as does the brilliance of the handling of colour and light. One of McNicoll's paintings was described by a critic writing for the London Sunday Times in 1913 as convincing, but not over-emphasized, and the same delicacy of handling can be ascribed to this painting. Her work disarmed all thoughts of labour in the studio and thus achieved the distinctive height of art concealing art, to paraphrase the Montreal art dealer and critic William R. Watson who, in his comprehensive review of the 1911 Art Association of Montreal spring exhibition, singled out McNicoll for special mention in the Montreal Gazette. Like many other artists of her generation, she sought a simpler and more direct experience of nature, but her gift was to attractively fuse the naturalism of earlier styles with more advanced impressionism. As she realized, the tension between the two modes kept things interesting. We thank Joan Murray for contributing the above essay. Heffel
