A Voyage into the Levant, A Brief Relation of a Journey... from England by the Way of Venice... , Unto Gran Cairo, with Particular Observations Concerning the Moderne Condition of the Turks, and other People under that Empire, 4th ed., 1650, title (within dec. woodcut border) det. and somewhat spotted and soiled, some spotting throughout and marginal damp staining towards rear, old manuscript accounts to pastedowns, contemp. reversed calf, broken and worn and lacking spine, 12mo. Wing B3316. See Atabey 119 (first edition) and Blackmer 154 (second edition). A rare edition of one of the earliest and best accounts of the Ottoman Empire. Inscribed on the front pastedown "William Bazely 1889 from Louis Henry Hall, a native of the City of Cloucester and grandson of a freeman of the same" followed by some notes on the text. Wing C6248. Dodsley, 1764, vign. title-page, copper engs. on letterpress, eng. port. mounted as frontis. (initialled J.H. and dated 1767 in ms.), B4-C2 torn and detached, with some loss, foxed and stained, ms. presentation inscription from Jonas Hanway on prelim. blank, marbled endpapers, contemp. red morocco bound for Jonas Hanway, extrems. rubbed, upper cover detached, sl. faded spine divided by gilt milled raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second compartment, remainder with the following tools: head of Brittania, winged hourglass, large sunburst, ever-seeing eye, and small sunburst, covers with gilt hounds tooth roll border enclosing wide inner border composed of roses and other flower tools, and fleur-de-lys tools, upper cover with head of Brittania in centre, lower cover with harp tool in centre, gilt roll on edges and turn-ins, 8vo. Gaskell 27. Inscribed, and with a fifteen line stanza ('O fair Britannia think...'), by Jonas Hanway to Miss Peters dated 6th January 1767. The Miss Peters in question was almost certainly the daughter of Hanway's long-term friend George Peters, who was a Governor of the Bank of England between 1785 and 1797.
