The frontis is an engraving after a drawing by Thicknesse of a man in Toulouse being pulled from limb to limb for his religious beliefs. The first edition was published in 1784 and stated "Vol. 1" on the title-page, though no more was then published.\n\nTicknesse's books are full of personal impressions and experiences, as well as factual information.
