Van Laer was active for over a decade in Rome, where his nickname was Il Bamboccio. Artists working in his style became known as the Bamboccianti. The painting depicts a man dancing on a table and a woman with a basket of eggs while other peasants and people gather around. Painting size is 18.5 inches by 25 inches. The painting is one of two Bambouche paintings purchased by Bradford deWolfe at the March 28, 1892 Borghese Appartment Palace auction in Rome, Italy. The 17th century Italian knight painting and a collection of rare books, being offered in this sale were purchased at the 1892 sale. This painting and the other Bambouche painting being offered (lot #152), are listed as lot number 258 on page 37 of the 1892 Borghese Palace auction catalog (online link listed below). The 1892 catalog description and measurements given match these paintings.Provenance: From the Borghese Palace in Rome, Italy. Prince Camillo Borghese, 6th Prince of Sulmona (1775-1832), married to Pauline Bonaparte in 1803. Remained in Borghese estate until 1892. Prince Paolo Borghese, 9th Prince of Sulmona (1845-1920) was forced to sell the contents of the Borghese Bibliotheque and Borghese Palace, grounds and property to the state due to the financial crash of the Bank of Italy in 1891.After many years the collection of manuscripts and several paintings purchased by Bradford deWolf at the Borghese Bibliotheque and Palace sale auction in 1892 are being offered in this March 8th auction. The collection passed down to the Estate of Dorothy 'Doda' deWolf of Washington, DC. She was born Princess Dorota Drucka Lubecka, the daughter of Countess Hegwige Opersdorff and Prince Francis Xavier Drucki Lubecki, a member of one of the oldest princely families of Europe. When the family's ancestral estate in Baltow, Poland was occupied by the Nazis at the beginning of World War II and later taken by the Russians, they fled to Paris, and in 1952, emigrated to the United States. Princess Dorota, known simply as 'Doda,' found employment in Wisconsin as an au pair, and later moved to Washington, DC where she worked for Elizabeth Arden. She eventually embarked on a very successful, 30-year real estate career at Begg - now Long & Foster - winning numerous awards in her field, as well as remaining very active in Polish affairs, including spearheading a Polish Cultural Center in Washington. In 1960, Doda married Francis Colt deWolf, Jr., known as 'Colt,' and for 34 years, Doda and Colt deWolf were a prominent couple in Washington Society, known for their constant hospitality and infectious vitality. Colt was a direct descendent of Chris Colt, a wealthy textile industrialist whose brother, Sam Colt, invented the Colt 45 revolver. Chris Colt's grandson, Bradford deWolf, was a purchaser at the great sales of the contents of the Borghese Palace, which took place in Italy in the 1890s. The property that Bradford deWolf purchased from the Borghese Palace passed down to his son, Francis Colt deWolf, I, who came to Washington in 1922 to work for the State Department as one of the first heads of the newly created Communications Department. The deWolfs, with their impressive Borghese furniture, moved into the largest private residence in Georgetown, the Bodisco House. Colt and Doda deWolf inherited these historic objects.1892 Borghese auction catalog link: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433082120704;view=1up;seq=7 Myers Auction Gallery

Crane, Bruce (Am. 1857-1937) Impressionist Landscape - East Hampton
Crane, Bruce (American, 1857-1937) Oil Painting. Crane, Bruce (American, 1857-1937) "Coastal Landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed lower left "Bruce Crane N.Y." In good condition. There is light inpainting in the sky, and 4 small dots in the foreground. Retains a plaque on reverse with artist's name as well as a fragment of an old Print Guild of America label. Painting is from an East Hampton, Long Island, NY estate. Measures 12 inches x 16 inches. Frame measures 17 inches x 21 inches. From Askart: Robert Bruce Crane was born in New York City on October 17, 1857. The son of Solomon Bruce Crane and Leah Gillespie, he was educated in New York's public schools and was exposed to the city's galleries and museums by his father, himself an amateur painter. By the age of seventeen, Crane had moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he was employed as a draftsman by an architect and builder. He soon decided to devote his career to painting, and in 1876 or 1877 he sought the guidance of the landscape painter Alexander H. Wyant, with whom he subsequently shared a close friendship until Wyant's death in 1892. Between 1878 and 1882, Crane attended the Art Students League in New York and traveled to Europe for further study. In the United States during this period, he painted in New Jersey, East Hampton, Long Island, and the Adirondacks. He wrote to his father from the Adirondacks that among the influential painters working nearby at the time were Eastman Johnson, George and James Smillie, and Samuel Coleman. He described the dramatic terrain: "Went to the famous Rainbow Falls which several artists have tried to paint . . . Wyant and Hart among them . . . over the top comes tumbling the water which strikes every few feet throwing a spray which catches the sun giving a most charming as well as wonderful appearance." Crane spent time in East Hampton, on the eastern end of Long Island, during the summer of 1880 or 1881 and possibly during other summers. In these early works, Crane painstakingly reproduced the pastures, hayfields, and barnyards of rural East Hampton. A critic later remarked that, "Troubled or placid skies, the bright luminous atmosphere of a summer's day, or the gray tones of autumn were given in these pictures, not only with truth to nature and a certain poetic sentiment, but with a brilliant sparkling quality of effect." After 1904, Crane spent many of his summers in the popular artist's colony of Old Lyme, Connecticut. In 1915, he joined with Emil Carlsen, Charles Davis, and J. Alden Weir to establish Twelve Landscape Painters, an exhibiting organization of artists. He died in Bronxville, New York in 1937. Crane was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists' Fund Society, National Academy of Design, Lotus Club, Salmagundi Club, Society of American Artists, and the Union Internationale des Beaux-Arts et des Lettres. His paintings are found in the Brooklyn Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Museum of American Art, among many others.
