Château Cheval-Blanc 1982

A CHANCE TO ACQUIRE AN EXTRAORDINARY LOT OF TWENTY CASES OF CHEVAL BLANC 1982 These wines have been stored in optimum conditions in a temperature and humidity controlled cellar since they were bought in the 80s Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1982 Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A) Very good appearance. Levels into neck Tasting Notes: At the Christie's and Vira 82' tasting in Brussels in 2006...Deep colour with some rim maturity. Powerful, rich and sweet with the slow-burning fragrance of Cabernet Franc beginning to emerge. Now with some complexity and heady fragrance. Fairly tannic, firm and taut; Crisp acidity leading to long sweet fruit finish. Slightly sweaty middle palate hinting at bottle variation but overall still solid and well-cellared bottles likely to improve over next ten years. Brussels December 2006. David Elswood Worth mentioning the curious cepage mix: Cabernet Franc 60 Merlot 34 Cabernet Sauvignon only 1 but Malbec 5 Interesting on the palate: sweet, elegant, stylish. At Kaplan's event, among a wide variety of 82's, my joint highest mark, with Ch. Petrus and Le Pin….By now showing considerable maturity with an orange edge and 'legs' as impressive as the arch of Durham Cathedral; rich, bricky bouquet; well evolved with extract but with a slightly bitter tannic-iron finish. Lovely flavour. Nov 1999 ****(*) Good life ahead M.B. 240 bottles per lot

CHÂTEAU PALMER 2015 Tasted at the Château in April, during the En Primeur tastings. Huge, allenveloping, opulent nose. Amazing mocha and black fruit energy on the palate. Château Mouton-Rothschild 1945

MOUTON-ROTHSCHILD 1945 IN MAGNUMS AN ARTISTIC VISION It was in 1927 that Baron Philippe de Rothschild set forth on his quest to become one of the most recognisable lables on the planet. For it was in that year that the Baron commissioned a piece of art from the renowned architect and stage-designer Jacques Carlu for Mouton's 1924 vintage. It was a highly stylized nineteen-twentyish pattern of the Mouton ram's head in black and grey, with a pale brown formalized chai and the five arrows representing in the family's arms the five Rothschild brothers who set out from Frankfurt in Napoleon's time. It also marked the beginning of an era at Mouton where 'château bottling' became the norm. The custom at Mouton of stating how many bottles the vintage produced and the numbering of each bottle began in 1934. Because of the controversial nature of château bottling and what it meant to the trade at the time and the soon to follow war the Baron rested this practice. The return of the artist label could not have restarted with a more auspicious year. Anyone associated with the wine trade at the time new that 1945 had produced one of the greatest vintages ever harvested. To celebrate this year of victory and French liberation Baron Philippe sought out a Rome prize winning artist, Philippe Jullian, to design a label for this monumental claret. Jullian's design incorporated the tendrils of the vine in gold; the words 1945 Année de la Victoire and a gold letter 'V'. It was produced as a top strip, about one inch deep, of the label the label as a whole, and this is the pattern that has repeated ever since: a specially-commissioned, previously unpublished design by an outstanding contemporary artist. The rest of the label bearing in gold, as it had done in the years just before the war, the original Carlu design of 1927, on a shield, with mouton supporters, surmounted by the coronet of a baron of the Austrian Empire. Property of a Gentleman Recently removed by Christie's from a temperature and humidity controlled, professionally maintained storage facility. Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1945 Pauillac, 1er cru classé Levels: two into neck, four base neck; one cut capsule verified château stamped cork with vintage visible, lightly bin soiled, Réserve du Château labels, Reserve Nicolas neck labels and stamped labels "I originally coined the phrase 'a Churchill of a wine', meaning larger than life, imediately recognisable, complex, endlessly fascinating, unforgettable. The only first growth I tasted in its (relative) youth. In July 1954 I wrote 'dark, deep, (yet) translucent; amazing nose. Quite unlike any other claret, spicy, Indian mango chutney (!). Loaded with tannin, acidity and all the good things. Full and flavoury'. Apart from the chutney, it still applies. The first thing to notice is its extraordinary colour. I have on more than one occasion recognised the wine by this alone. And its bouquet is equally distinctive, in fact one of the most astonishing smells ever to emerge from grapes grown out of doors. The power and spiciness surges out of the glass like a sudden eruption of Mount Etna: cinnamon, eucalyptus, ginger, 'Friars Balsam' (noted once!). Impossible to describe but imimitable, incomparable, and, because of this and its appearance, several times 'guessed' blind. There is simply no ther wine like it. Its taste is a component of smell, its fragrance is reflected on the palate. Still lovely, sitll vivacious. Seemingly tireless -- indeed another half century anticipated. June 2001 ****** (6 stars)." Château Cheval-Blanc 1947

THE LEGENDARY CHEVAL-BLANC 1947 COLLECTION ONE OF THE GREATEST WINES OF ALL TIME OFFERED IN EXTRAORDINARY FORMATS. A TRUE RARITY AND UNIQUE ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTION CHATEAU CHEVAL BLANC The estate of Cheval-Blanc is situated at the extremity of Saint-Emilion bordering on Pomerol, with views of l'Evangile and La Conseillante, and offers a very curious mixture of soil and subsoil areas whose nature changes at each step. A vineyard walk along the roadside clearly illustrates this; at Cheval-Blanc the soils are rich in clay, gravel, deep tan in colour, the soil looks nurished and moist. A few meters away, as one encroches upon La Dominique, the soil change is evidenced by more sand mixed with clay, altogether a lighter colour, more beige than tan. Their respective wines are at opposite ends of a spectrum, those of Cheval-Blanc retain breed and class. The result of Cheval-Blanc's soil diversity and an extremely well-chosen selection of grape varieties, combined with the assiduous care taken over the elevage and winemaking, coalesces to make a wine of a great softness, body and delicacy, plus a delicious bouquet, but most particularly a distinctive style which makes it instantly recognizable and more importantly in demand. No other wine in the appelation has a broad adrinking plateau as that Cheval-Blanc. Vintage 1947 ***** "The second of the three great post-war vintage. An increasingly hot summer followed by harvesting in almost tropical conditions. The grapes had an exceptionally high sugar content but the heat caused serious fermentation problems, resulting in quite a few wines suffering from high volatile acidity. On the whole, exceptionally rich almost voluptuous wines" Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine book Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1947 Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A) All of the following wines were reconditionned at the chateau in 2010 and are in perfect condition. They all have new caspules, new labels and new original wooden cases from the chateau Tasting note: Having a 1947 Cheval Blanc served out of an impeccably stored magnum twice in three months during the summer of 1994, and on another occasion, from an extraordinary jerobaum, made me once again realize what a great job I have. The only recent Bordeaux vintage that comes even remotely close to the richness, texture, and viscosity of so many of these right bank 1947s is 1982. What can I say about this mammoth wine that is more like port than dry red table wine? The 1947 Cheval Blanc exhibits such a thick texture it could double as motor oil. The huge nose of fruitcake, chocolate, leather, coffee, and Asian spices is mind-boggling. The unctuous texture and richness of sweet fruit are amazing. Consider the fact that this wine is, technically, appallingly deficient in acidity and excessively high in alcohol. Moreover, its volatile acidity levels would be considered intolerable by modern day oenologists. Yet how can they explain that after 47 years the wine is still remarkably fresh, phenomenally concentrated, and profoundly complex? It has to make you wonder about the direction of modern day winemaking. Except for one dismal, murky, troubled, volatile double-magnum, this wine has been either perfect or nearly perfect every time I have had it. 100 points. Château Mouton-Rothschild 1945

A CHURCHILL OF A WINE History Château Mouton Rothschild is a member of an elite group of Premier Cru estates in the commune of Pauillac and has the enviable position of controlling 207 acres in arguably some of the world's most important terroir. While Pauillac is not the largest of the communal appellations, that honor falls to Margaux, it is no coincidence that no fewer than three of the four Premier Crus and no fewer than fifteen other classified châteaux, nearly one third of those in the 1855 Classification, reside on this most important place of French 'terroir'. As a commune, Pauillac is split in two by a stream which flows diagonally across the territory in a north-easterly direction. North and west of this stream the land gently rises to a height of 27 meters above sea level, it is on this side that both Rothschild estates and Pontet-Canet can be found. South and east lie the Bages and Grand-Puy-Lacoste plateaux, the Bataileys, the Pichons and of course Château Latour. The soil in Pauillac is heavy gravel, thicker to the north than to the south and based on a subsoil of larger stones and iron based sand. It is precisely this soil quality that lends itself to excellent drainage in damp years. When combined with the old vines found at many of the estates and the relatively high water table the ability to withstand a dry season is the secret magic underneath this venerable terroir and of the resultant wines. At Mouton the classic Bordeaux varietal mix of Cabernet Sauvignon (77, Merlot (12, Cabernet Franc (9 and Petit Verdot (2 is observed in the vineyard. Average age of the vines are 48 years and are planted to a high-density ratio of plants to acre. At it's best this combination produces as full and concentrated a wine as you are likely to find in the Médoc. To be "Mouton" the wine will have its unmistakable opulence and a seductive aromatic cedar wood like complexity which makes for an exhilarating consumable liquid. Château Mouton-Rothschild 1986

MOUTON-ROTHSCHILD NINETEEN EIGHTY SIX THIRTY DOZEN IN ORIGINAL CASES Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1986 Pauillac, 1er cru classé "After stumbling over some wines I thought were high class Bordeaux, I nailed this wine in one of the blind tastings for this article. In most tastings where a great Bordeaux is inserted with California Cabernets, the Bordeaux comes across as drier, more austere, and not nearly as rich and concentrated (California wines are inevitably fruitier and more massive). To put it mildly, the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild held its own (and then some), in a flight that included the Caymus Special Selection, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23, Dunn Howell Mountain, and Joseph Phelps Eisele Vineyard. Clearly the youngest looking, most opaque and concentrated wine of the group, it tastes as if it has not budged in development since I first tasted it out of barrel in March, 1987. An enormously concentrated, massive Mouton-Rothschild, comparable in quality, but not style, to the 1982, 1959, and 1945, this impeccably made wine is still in its infancy. Interestingly, when I was in Bordeaux several years ago, I had this wine served to me blind from a magnum that had been opened and decanted 48 hours previously. Even then, it still tasted like a barrel sample! I suspect the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild requires a minimum of 15-20 more years of cellaring; it has the potential to last for 50-100 years! Given the outrageously high prices being fetched by so many of the great 1982s and 1990s (and lest I forget, the 1995 Bordeaux futures), it appears this wine might still be one of the "relative bargains" in the fine wine marketplace. I wonder how many readers will be in shape to drink it when it does finally reach full maturity? The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore." Undoubtedly, he is also revered among wine lovers who have his wines in their cellars. For decades he managed the estates of others as well as his own vineyards. He studied oenology in Dijon and particularly appreciated the chance to taste wines other than from Burgundy, thus enhancing his overall knowledge of wine making. From the beginning, Henri Jayer had great respect for the soil and for the grapes, his raw material, preferring 'selection massale' to clones, as then he could produce small berries with resistant skins. He loved old vines, if possible with an average of 50 years, and this enabled him to limit production without recourse to green harvesting. An enemy of any form of 'greenness', he always destalked and was an early supporter of sorting tables. He picked very ripe and used natural yeasts. Cold macerations before fermentation and new Troncais oak barrels were a rule of thumb, always marrying modernity with tradition. We certainly owe much to Henri Jayer, particularly the 'discovery' of Cros Parantoux, which was lying fallow, requiring him to clear it of rocks with a wheelbarrow! To appreciate the great wines of Henri Jayer at their best, remember that they normally have a good deal of sediment, so rest them well after any movement.
