À propos de l'objet

James Bowie Signed Document. Dated January 5, 1836. Small folio 31.6 x 20 cm. Very good copy neatly penned with flourishing signatures. The document reads in part, "Know all men by these present that we James Bowie, Moseley Baker & Francis W. Johnson are held and firmly bound unto H. C. Hudson Judge he was appointed second judge of the municipality of Austin by the provisional government of Texas in the fall of 1835, and on January 13, 1836, was made comptroller of the treasury under that government ... in the... sum of Five Hundred dollars lawful money of Texas." Legal document outlining money owed and payment. This document was signed by James "Jim" Bowie who would die two months later at the Alamo. He was in command of the volunteer forces in San Antonio during the siege and fall of the Alamo. Bowie will always be remembered for the knife that bears his name, his search for the fabled Spanish mine on the San Saba, and dying for Texas Independence at the Alamo. This remarkable document is also signed by Moseley Baker and Francis Johnson who fought for the Texas cause. Baker and Johnson, during August of 1835, traveled to East Texas to raise troops for the Texas Revolution. Baker was involved in the Battle of San Jacinto and was wounded there. Johnson was a captain during the Anahuac disturbances of 1832, and appointed adjutant and inspector general under Stephen F. Austin and Edward Burleson. Both men were involved in numerous events occurring during the Texas Campaign. Bowie signatures are excessively rare and seldom appear for sale on the rare book and manuscript market.
